A Life Skill

Hi there,

For the first entry in this new year, and on a special day for me, let's review one of the topics we have been dealing with: success and its secrets. We've talked about what makes the most successful people on the planet different from the rest of us. We all agreed with the fact that practice, hard work and a bit of natural talent are key factors to be high achievers.

In this entry, we are going to listen to Chris Hadfield, the former commander of the International Space Station, talking about his experiences and what life skills have been essential for him to survive both up in space and back down here on Earth.

For those who haven't heard of Chris Hadfield, I must say that there has been no other astronaut quite like him. Along these years, we have been learning how life in space is like. He has managed to teach us several facts about gravity and answer many of our questions. He has shown us how to shave or brush one's teeth in zero gravity; he was able to make a burrito or a peanut butter sandwich. We didn't know how astronauts sleep until he showed it and he even performed David Bowie's Space Oddity out there. Undoubtedly, he's a skilful man.

He has also written about his experience in his book, an Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth

I'm eager to read your comments on this topic. Try to leave your comment if you haven't done it before and you'll succeed in your English.

  1. I agree with Chris Hadfield when he says that qualifications are not important but being technically competent and having an ability to communicate with the people around you. In order to be successful in your life you have to manage to cope with the difficulties that you will have to deal with along your life. That's the main point. There are lots of people who don't know how to overcome those difficult situations and they simply ruin their lives. They aren't able to visualise the possible solutions and definitely they aren't able to prioritise the most important aspects of their lives. Today I'm older and wiser (ha,ha,ha) and I do think that I have succeeded in my life because I know how to cope with daily difficulties and I go on struggling for what I really want in my life. What about you?

    1. This is the most important thing of this life (to be able to feel, to live) this short period of time at one hundred percent and never stop doing plans. From my point of view you only need will power. Other qualifications are in the second place. I'm a very patient person and I always get what I want Although sometimes if I'm falling down, nothing and nobody are going to stop me gotten up to overcome trying again .

    2. Hello classmates
I agree at all with this topic. Along of our lifes, when you stard studying or working, you discover that there are somethings into of you that they make you different of the rest your workmates, for example you have been the best at hight school but you are shy or unfriendly you won't be prepared to work with other people or If you must take a decision at work and the lifes of your workmates depend of you and you get panic this can be terrible. This is by the skills are the difference between us and they can help you to success or not .

  2. Hi,
I think that the most important of this life is to build up one´s hopes, for example I want to learn English I like being able to listen to a conversation and I can understand it and to talk with fluent too. I don´t know if I´ll be able to but I have to build up one´s hopes and I´ll continue studying. Perhaps I haven´t skills for learning English but I´m going to continue.
There are people skiller than other but there are people with much to hope also that they get what they decided done.

  3. I like his perspective on what you're doing now is the most important thing in the world in this moment. Success is a mixture of things: skills, luck, chances. In my view, something very important is how to face challenges, difficult situations...Are you afraid or you face the challenges confidently?

    Difficult topic.
In this life, I think not everyone has the same opportunities, even if you are very good at your job.
And I think as much as I have a special skill. No will stand out in life, unless you have much luck.
But my mandate in life is work, work and work. That goes a long way.
